Pohela Boishakh

The Bengali New Year in red and white: on the homepage, the white of a festival sari edged with its broad red border, and your prizes riding in the Mangal Shobhajatra on painted papier-mâché figures — a ringed-eyed owl, a scaled fish and a long-necked Bankura horse on little wheeled floats, each prize in a painted medallion and its name on a sari-bordered placard — over a courtyard of white rice-paste alpona under a krishnachura tree in flame-red bloom at first light. A countdown on four painted shokher hari pots in the two weeks before the day, kept as Bangladesh keeps it on 14 April or by the West Bengal almanac on the 14th or 15th, and "Shubho Noboborsho" on the day, in Bengali calligraphy on Bengali pages. After dark the mela at dusk with hurricane lamps and lit stalls; a red cloth halkhata ledger for the wallet, a cracked clay pot for the 404, and an alpona drawn across the screen by one flowing white line for the dark/light switch. Bengali text is set in the theme's own faces. Use it all year: outside the season it is simply a shop at the mela.
