Cherry Blossom

Hanami in the manner of a Japanese woodblock print: on the homepage a print of a pale spring sky shading into Prussian blue, a flowering cherry bough outlined in indigo, petals drifting down onto a river, and your prizes laid out in a lacquered bento box on a red picnic cloth on the bank, each one named on a paper slip, with the artist's red seal stamped in the corner. Blossom comes at a different time in every city, so you pick where your customers are — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sendai, Sapporo, Seoul or Washington, DC, from published averages — or set your own date: blossoms count down to full bloom in the two weeks before it, and a greeting runs for the ten days of hanami season around it. Washi paper, indigo and blossom pink by day; after dark yozakura, the night blossom lit by paper lanterns over a dark river. A bare branch losing its last petal for the 404, a hanging scroll for the winners' total, and a print pulled from the block for the dark/light switch. Use it all year: outside the season it is simply a shop under the blossom.
