Mărțișor

Mărțișor, the first of March in Romania and Moldova: on the homepage your prizes are pinned to little cotton cards the way mărțișoare are sold, each with a red-and-white twisted cord threaded through the card and tied in a bow, the prize hanging beneath it as the charm, while snowdrops push up through the last of the snow under the first spring sun. A countdown in the two weeks before 1 March, La mulți ani on the day, a quieter spring greeting through the week after while people still wear the cord, and an optional greeting for Women's Day on 8 March. The twisted cord runs through the whole shop as its signature line, with charms on threads — a snowdrop, a four-leaf clover, a ladybird, a horseshoe, a chimney sweep's ladder — and cross-stitch from the ie blouse; after dark a late-winter night in the village, snow falling and windows lit. Charms on a card whose cord has come undone for the 404, and a cord drawn taut across the screen that twists until it fills it for the dark/light switch. Use it all year: outside the season it is simply a shop hung with charms.
