Pongal

The Tamil harvest festival, held over four days in mid-January: on the homepage, a courtyard on Thai Pongal morning, its red earth swept and washed, a great pulli kolam drawn on it in rice flour, its line looping round a grid of dots, and your prizes set in the kolam's cells in front of a new clay pot boiling over, the rice and milk foaming up past a turmeric plant tied round its neck, sugarcane stalks either side and a toran of mango leaves strung overhead. A countdown on banana leaves in the two weeks before Bhogi, then each of the four days by name, Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal, with a Happy Pongal greeting, kept as the Tamil calendar gives Thai Pongal for 2027 to 2036 or on your own date, for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and the Tamil diaspora. Turmeric, cane green and cane purple, terracotta and sun orange on rice-flour cream by day; after dark the hour before dawn, the courtyard silver under the moon and the sky beginning to turn. A banana leaf for the wallet, a kolam whose loops trace 404 round its dots, a toran with cattle bells over the footer, and for the dark/light switch the pot boils over until white froth fills the screen. Every other page of the shop is dressed in the same materials — kolam borders, mango-leaf torans, sugarcane, banana leaves and clay — with a small drawing from the courtyard on every empty or waiting screen, from an empty pot to a kolam half drawn. Use it all year: outside the season it is simply a warm, sunlit shop.
