Raksha Bandhan

The festival of brothers and sisters, on the full moon of Shravan: on the homepage, your prizes set as the jewelled centres of great rakhis laid out on a length of rani-pink silk brocade — each medallion a rosette of gold zari and silk petals ringed with seed pearls, kundan stones of ruby and emerald and little mirrors — their twisted silk threads curling across the cloth to tasselled ends. A countdown on four diamonds of kaju katli in the two weeks before the day and a Happy Raksha Bandhan greeting on it, kept as Indian calendars give Shravan Purnima for 2026 to 2035 or on your own date, for India, Nepal and the diaspora in the US, Canada and the UK. Saffron, marigold and rani pink on warm cream by day, peacock teal at the edges; after dark a warm festive evening of deep plum silk with its zari glinting. A brass thali of roli, rice and mithai for the winners, a length of brocade for the wallet, a rakhi whose medallion is the zero of 404, and a rakhi tied at the middle of the screen whose rosette blooms into the new mode for the dark/light switch. Every other page of the shop is dressed in the same materials — zari borders, scalloped gota lace, kundan stones ringed with seed pearls, twisted silk thread and tassels — with a small drawing from the festival on every empty or waiting screen, from an empty thali to a rakhi posted to a sibling far away. Use it all year: outside the season it is simply a rich, warm shop.
