Songkran

The water festival of the April heat: on the homepage, a great silver basin of jasmine-scented water under a phuang malai garland of jasmine, marigold and rose, your prizes floating on it in little embossed silver khan bowls among frangipani flowers and drifting buds, each named on a tag edged with the stripes of a pha sin, while drops of water arc and sparkle overhead. A countdown on four drops of water in the two weeks before the festival, and a greeting through its days, day by day, kept as Thailand keeps Songkran on 13–15 April, as Laos keeps Pi Mai, Myanmar Thingyan or Cambodia Choul Chnam Thmey, or on your own dates. Jasmine white, silver and water blue with marigold and rose by day; after dark the warm festival night, garland lights strung over the water and their reflections trembling in it. A sheet of pha sin silk for the wallet, an empty bowl letting fall its last drop for the 404, and a drop that splashes into the page and ripples the new mode outward for the dark/light switch. Use it all year: outside the season it is simply a cool, bright shop.
